Calheta is one of the oldest villages in the island and was one of the first to be populated by the colonizers and founded on the 1st of July 1502. On the main way leading to the beach you will find good fish restaurants serving fish “cataplanas” and other tasty seafood dishes and local specialties, to be sampled with cold white wine or a “shandy”.
Beyond its natural and attractive location, surrounded by rocks and sea, Calheta has an old sugar factory, founded in 1901 where is still produced sugar cane honey and “aguardente” (sugar cane spirit) to offer.
